![]() Networking: The Final Frontier ???
Now we come to the part that interests me the most and requires the most research and development .
How to put together the pieces I have acquired, into a package that will give all four members
of our family, equal access to the Internet and color and black and white printing. All while protecting
my system ,from people , hackers , etc. , who are a lot smarter than I !
Linux , is the key here , I believe . I can use the 486 boxes to configure one into a firewall , one into a router ,
and another into a file server , with the last being a proxy server .The proxy server will handle the task of
converting my intranet addresses , thru my ISP , out to the net , and back . To my ISP , it will seem as if only
one machine is making requests . The firewall , will filter out incoming packets that are not the result of an
originating request from my network . The firewall will protect me from the hackers . The router , is liike an
old time telephone operator . who makes sure everyone gets the right messages . The file server simply
will provide access to common resources , maintained on a hard drive . Programs and data that need to
be shared.
